How to Use a First-Bet Offer

What a First-Bet Offer Actually Is
Books often market this as a "risk-free" bet. It is not: your own money is staked. It's a refund-if-you-lose offer — place a qualifying bet, and if it loses, the book refunds your stake as bonus bets (not cash).
The same offer appears under many names across different books:
They all work the same way: win = keep the winnings; lose = get a bonus bet (or site credit) refund. The format may differ slightly, but the core mechanics are identical.
The Two Outcomes — and What Actually Happens
Outcome 1: Your bet wins
You collect the normal winnings on the qualifying bet. The refund protection is irrelevant — you're in the same position as any winning bet. The hedge on the other side loses, but your net is a normal hedge profit.
Outcome 2: Your bet loses
You lose the qualifying bet stake. The book refunds that amount as bonus bets. You then convert the bonus bets via hedging — at roughly a 60–70% conversion rate.
Meanwhile, your hedge on the other side won, so you collected profit there too.
A Worked Example: $1,000 First-Bet Offer
Offer: First bet up to $1,000, refunded in bonus bets if it loses. You get $1,000 in bonus bets. Market: Team A −110 / Team B −110.
Setup
Qualifying bet: $1,000 on Team A at −110 (the offer book).
Hedge: $633.33 on Team B at −110 (a second book).
The hedge is smaller than the qualifying stake — that's normal for a first-bet offer. A loss still returns real value as a bonus-bet refund, so you don't need to hedge the full $1,000 to be covered.
If Team A wins (qualifying bet wins)
Qualifying bet profit: +$909.09
Hedge loses its stake: −$633.33
Net: +$275.76
If Team B wins (qualifying bet loses)
Qualifying stake refunded as a $1,000 bonus bet — worth about $700 once converted (roughly 70%).
Hedge wins: +$575.75
Net: +$275.75
Bottom line
About $275 locked-in profit no matter which team wins — the two outcomes land within a couple dollars of each other by design. The exact number shifts a little with your actual bonus-bet conversion rate (typically 60–70%), but it stays balanced either way. Plug in your real books in the PromoEdge calculator to fine-tune the hedge for your specific offer.
Key Terms to Check
Refund form
Bonus bets or site credit? Site credit is more valuable. Most first-bet offers refund as bonus bets.
Settlement timing
How quickly does the bonus bet credit appear? Some require the qualifying game to fully settle before credit arrives.
Minimum odds on qualifying bet
Most first-bet offers require the qualifying bet to be placed at odds of −200 or longer. This is to prevent you from placing a near-certain winner.
One per household / per payment method
Standard restriction. The same physical address or card can only claim the offer once.
